§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Employment (Viscount Ullswater)Responsibility for the subject of the Question has been delegated to the Employment Service Agency under its chief executive. The agency is therefore responding to the Question.
Letter from M. E. G. Fogden, Chief Executive, dated 17th November 1992:
As the Employment Service is an Executive Agency, the Secretary of State has asked me to write to you direct to respond to your parliamentary Question about how many people during 1991 and 1992 were in receipt of the youth training bridging allowance for the maximum period of eight weeks. This is something which falls within the responsibili-ties delegated to me as chief executive of the agency.
Unfortunately the information you have asked for is not available in the format you requested. Figures on those in receipt of bridging allowance for the full
44WAeight-week period are not available as there is no further breakdown of the information to give particular reasons as to why the claims to bridging allowance have ceased. However the attached tables show the bridging allowance figures collected each month, which give the total number of young people in receipt of bridging allowance and the number of terminations of bridging allowance in that period.
Terminations of bridging allowance may occur for a number of reasons. For example, a young person may no longer qualify for bridging allowance if he finds a Youth Training place or a job; if his eight-week entitlement is exhausted; or if he is sick.
I hope this is helpful.
As decided by the Administration Committee of the House of Commons, Chief Executive replies to written parliamentary Questions will now be published in the Official Report. I will place a copy of this letter in the Library of the House.
