To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the number and percentage of standard rate and higher rate tax payers in(a) Pendle, (b) Lancashire and (c) the United Kingdom for the most recent year for which figures are available.

The table provides estimates of the number and percentage of taxpayers in Lancashire and the United Kingdom liable to standard and higher rate tax for 1989–90, the latest available year for which information can be provided below the United Kingdom level. I regret that estimates are not available below county level. Married couples are counted as one unit in this last year before independent taxation.
