HC Deb 17 November 1992 vol 214 cc172-3W
Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many engineering places in advanced education have been available in each of the last five years; and how many were unfilled.

Mr. Forman

The Universities Funding Council—UFC —and the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council—PCFC—have distributed recurrent funding on the basis of funded numbers or places. But these funded numbers do not necessarily reflect the total number of available places, as additional students may be recruited on a "fees-only" basis. Data on the total number of engineering places which institutions wish to make available each academic year are not collected by the Funding Councils.

Data which are available on funded places and enrolments—full-time equivalents—home and EC students—in engineering and technology are given in the table.
