HC Deb 16 November 1992 vol 214 c91W
Mr. Richards

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what measures are being taken to combat single teenage pregnancies in Wales.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The Health Promotion Authority for Wales undertakes a range of initiatives in collaboration with national and local agencies, to promote healthy sexuality, and combat teenage pregnancy. They include provision of information and advice on contraception, sex education, pilot projects including parents, research on knowledge and attitudes/behaviour, the development of databases for professionals working in this area, and support for multi-agency initiatives. The Department also provides direct support to the Family Planning Association in Wales for its work which includes training for those working with young people.

District health authorities are also addressing the issue of teenage pregnancy and many have introduced measures geared to local needs, including health education programmes and services specifically for young people. Further guidance will be contained in the "Protocol for Investment in Health Gain: Emotional Health and Relationships", due to be published in early 1993.
