HL Deb 16 November 1992 vol 540 cc38-9WA
Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What practical management advice and financial assistance will be available to farmers to modify or relocate traditional barn owl nest sites, nest boxes and roosting sites to assist them to conform with the application of paragraph 3.1 of the Code of Practice for the Control of Salmonellae during the storage, handling and transport of raw materials intended for incorporation into feedingstuffs, especially in view of their proposal to extend the scope of this code to cover the storage of materials for direct use as animal feedingstuffs.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Earl Howe)

I propose to amend the code to include advice to farmers on how to comply with the code while meeting their responsibilities under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The exact form of this advice will be fully considered with the organisations representing conservationists and farmers. I have no plans to make financial assistance available.
