Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what plans he has to improve the welfare of live animals transported(a) within the United Kingdom and (b) to the rest of the European Community.

A new EC directive on the protection of animals during transport is due to be implemented across the Community by 1 January 1993. The Commission is to table proposals for further detailed rules to supplement the directive and during negotiations the Government will be seeking the highest possible safeguards for all animals.
