To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what sums have been spent on the clearance of derelict and contaminated land and the area covered by the Dearne valley city grant project in each of the last five years.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many acres of land in England and Wales are vacant or derelict.

In England, based on the 1988 derelict land survey, there are 100,035 acres of derelict land. The 1990 national survey of vacant land in urban areas of England estimates that there are about 150,000 acres of vacant land in English towns and cities. There will, of course, be overlap between those two figures. Statistics are not available for vacant land in non-urban areas of England.

Vacant and derelict land in Wales are matters for the Secretary of State for Wales.
