HC Deb 10 November 1992 vol 213 cc772-4W
Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many nursing and midwifery students took up places in each region in England in each year since 1990; and if she will make a statement on the likely level for 1993, assuming both volume and percentage changes.

Mr. Sackville

[holding answer 6 November 1992]: The tables show a reduction in student numbers which has resulted from improved planning and better strategies for the retention of staff. This helps ensure that the numbers of student nurses and midwives being trained matches more closely the numbers of posts available for qualifying students. The demand for places is assessed locally in consultation with clinical directors, professional heads and service managers.
