To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many hospital beds were available to the national health service in(a) 1979 and (b)

In 1989 there were 283,000 beds in national health service hospitals in England, compared with 362,000 beds in 1979. Over the same period the number of hospital in-patient cases treated annually rose from 5.4 million to 6.6 million.
