HC Deb 09 November 1992 vol 213 c630W
Mr. Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the most recent figures expressed as total expenditure and on a per capita basis, for gambling in the United Kingdom on(a) off-course and on-course betting,(b)gaming machines,(c)casinos,(d)bingo,(e)football pools and(f)small lotteries.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Estimated figures for net consumer expenditure on gambling (i.e., amount staked less winnings) in the financial year 1991–92 are set out in the table. Those for off-course betting, pool betting and bingo are based on returns to Her Majesty's Customs and Excise. Those for casinos and lotteries are taken from the annual report of the Gaming Board for Great Britain, although the latter includes only those lotteries registered with the Board.

The estimates for on-course betting and gaming machines cannot be calculated directly and should be treated with extreme caution. The turnover per head per annum is based on an estimated United Kingdom population of 57.4 million.

Estimated net consumer expenditure/year £ million Expenditure/head/ year £
Off-course betting 1,205 21
On-course betting 103 1.8
Gaming machines 549 9.6
Casinos 367 6.4
Bingo 240 4.2
Pools 576 10
Lotteries 37 0.6
