HC Deb 09 November 1992 vol 213 c630W
Mr. Burns

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many prisoners there were in Chelmsford prison at the latest available date;

(2) what further action is being considered to reduce overcrowding in Chelmsford prison.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

On 6 November there were 308 prisoners in Chelmsford prison. The establishment's certified normal accommodation (that is its uncrowded capacity) is 244. The prison service is considering how to meet the need for increased capacity in the prison, and I hope to be in a position to announce proposals on this in the near future.
