Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of the work force in Wales was engaged in manufacturing in(a) 1979 and (b) at the latest date.

In June 1979, 30.5 per cent. of employees were employed in manufacturing. In June 1992 the figure was 23.1 per cent.

The table gives a breakdown of manufacturing employment for these two years with, for comparison, employment figures for energy and water supply industries.
