Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department for the last year how many individuals have been refused leave to remain or requested to leave the United Kingdom; and how many have actually left.

Mr. Charles Wardle

In 1991, 16,300 applications for variation of leave were refused. Comprehensive information on those leaving following refusal, or on the outcome of subsequent appeals or reconsideration of the case, is not readily available.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) visitors, (b) short-term students and (c) would-be students were refused (i) entry clearance and (ii) entry to the United Kingdom by country and for each month since January 1991.

It is not possible from the information available centrally to ascertain how many of the persons covered by tables 2 and 3 were seeking entry as visitors, short-term students or would-be students, but it is likely that the large majority of them were.
