HC Deb 05 November 1992 vol 213 c321W
Mr. Beggs

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what representation has been made by him and his predecessors to eastern European states and the former Soviet Union to obtain information on the supply of weapons and explosives to the Irish Republican Army.

Mr. Mates

Discussions have taken place with several eastern European Governments and with the Government of Russia. Concern about the supply by Libya of Czechoslovak-made Semtex explosive to PIRA led to the conclusion of the convention on the marking of plastic explosives. The Government will continue to pursue all leads about the supply of weapons and explosives to the Provisional Irish Republican Army.
