To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the level of imports of hazardous waste in(a) 1981 and (b)

There was no requirement for information on hazardous waste imports to be supplied to the Secretary of State until the Transfrontier Shipment of Hazardous Waste Regulations 1988 came into force on 1 October 1988. During the 1988–89 financial year, approximately 52,000 tonnes of hazardous waste were imported. This figure comprises estimates from 1 April to 30 September 1988, and collected data thereafter.
