§ Mr. Peter BottomleyTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much tax he expects to repay in the current year and 1993 for losses at Lloyd's.
§ Mr. DorrellIn 1992–93, to the end of September, repayments to Lloyd's underwriters have amounted to £143 million. These relate almost entirely to losses incurred in 1988–89.
The Lloyd's market declared net trading losses of £509 million for the 1988–89 tax year. Lloyd's underwriters are entitled to set their shares of these losses against their other income which has been subject to tax.
No separate forecasts are made of the eventual amount of such repayments.
