Mrs. Helen Jackson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will introduce proposals to ensure that public authorities are notified of any domestic water disconnections on grounds of health and safety.

Mr. Maclean

Section 63 of the Water Industry Act 1991 already requires a water undertaker who disconnects, or otherwise cuts off, a supply of water to any inhabited house and does so without restoring the supply to that house within 24 hours, to serve notice informing the local authority in whose area the house is situated no later than 48 hours after the supply is cut off.
