Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he has any plans to appoint inspectors to investigate the role of auditors in the collapse of the BCCI.

Mr. Neil Hamilton

The accountancy profession's joint disciplinary scheme announced in April that it had appointed a committee of inquiry at the request of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales to look into the conduct and competence of members and member firms in relation to the collapse of BCCI. The committee is chaired by Sir John Bailey KCB. I have no plans to appoint inspectors.
