Mr. Sainsbury

The consultation paper on the assisted areas review stated that the Government's aim was to implement a revised map early in 1993, following the necessary clearance with the European Commission. This remains our intention.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what will be the effect upon the current review of assisted area status of his announcement that certain coal mining areas will receive assisted area status; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Sainsbury

The Government have made a specific commitment that Barnsley, Doncaster and Mansfield will be given enhanced status. This will not affect the careful consideration that will be given to other areas in the light of the extensive process of consultation.
