HL Deb 03 November 1992 vol 539 cc119-20WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether there is potential danger in the transport of plutonium and if so what is its nature and what steps are taken to minimise it.

Baroness Denton of Wakefield

Plutonium is transported only in extremely robust containers designed and built in accordance with stringent internationally agreed standards laid down by the International Atomic Energy Agency. These require safety to be built into the design of the container so that the contents would not present a significant hazard even in the event of a serious accident. Appropriate measures are taken to ensure the security of these movements.
