HC Deb 03 November 1992 vol 213 c219W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what guidelines he has issued to local authorities on dealing with planning applications and welfare issues of commercial ostrich farms; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Soames

The Government have issued planning guidance to local authorities on the agricultural implications of planning applications and development plans, but this does not include specific guidance on ostrich farming.

The welfare of farmed animals is the responsibility of the state veterinary service which is monitoring ostrich farms. Local authorities have been asked to inform the SVS of any applications for licences to keep ostriches under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 as amended so that their welfare can be monitored.
