HC Deb 03 November 1992 vol 213 c139W
Mrs. Anne Campbell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will support proposals being put forward to the Council of Ministers to end the use of animals for the testing of cosmetics products and ingredients.

Mr. Leigh

The Government's policy in the negotiations on the proposed sixth Council amendment to the cosmetics directive is to keep animal testing to a minimum consistent with human safety. We will continue to press for reduction in animal testing and we hope that during our presidency member states will agree to the phasing out of testing on animals as soon as they can be replaced with suitably validated alternatives.
