To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people received mobility allowance in 1979; and how many now receive it.

In 1979, a total of 95,000 people received mobility allowance; by 1992 this figure had risen to 600,000—a more than sixfold increase. The introduction of disability living allowance will extend help with mobility costs even further.
