HC Deb 21 May 1992 vol 208 cc224-5W
Mr. Austin-Walker

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what assessment he has made of the national importance of the listed buildings on the Woolwich arsenal site; and what plans he has for their future.

Mr. Key

Eighteen buildings on the Woolwich Arsenal site have been assessed, against the normal national criteria, as being of special architectural or historic interest and placed on the statutory list. Responsibility for those buildings lies firstly with their owner, the Ministry of Defence, which has engaged consultants to advise on future uses of the site, since it is becoming surplus to operational requirements. I understand that the MoD is also consulting closely with the Crown Estates, as owners of some of the land, the Department of the Environment's conservation unit and English Heritage over options for the future use of the site which, as far as possible, recognise the importance to the heritage of the listed buildings there.

Mr. Austin-Walker

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage if he has any plans to visit the Woolwich arsenal site and inspect the listed buildings.

Mr. Key

No.
