Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1), pursuant to her answer of 12 May,Official Report, column 84, when she expects to have information or indications on the proportion of smokers in the United Kingdom and in each other European Community country later than the 1989 figures in the British Medical Journal;

(2) what information she receives from the European Commission on the trends in smoking in each or any parts of the European Community.

Dr. Mawhinney

Statistics on smoking prevalence in the United Kingdom are collected biennially by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys in the general hospital survey and published in the following year. The 1990 figures, which showed that adult smoking had declined to 39 per cent., were published in November 1991. The 1992 figures will be available in 1993.

The European Commission does not publish regular information on trends in smoking and has not published
