Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proportion of his Department's spending on transport is allocated in the current financial year to each of the following sectors:(a) highways, (b) railways, (c) water transport and (d) other; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. MacGregor

In 1992–93, the proportions are expected to be about:

  1. (a) Highways, 45 per cent.
  2. (b) Public Transport, 49.5 per cent.
  3. (c) Water (sea) 0.5 per cent.
  4. (d) Other, 5 per cent.

Inland water transport is the responsibility of the Department of the Environment and is not included in (c). (d) includes air transport as well as expenditure which cannot be allocated by mode.
