§ 21. Mr. GillTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will estimate the number of police officers returned to operational duties by the policy of civilianisation since 1979.
§ Mr. Charles WardleSince records were first started in 1983, some 5,700 police officers have been freed for operational duties by civilianising posts which do not require the powers or skills of a police officer. This represents an efficiency saving of some £110 million a year at 1991–92 prices.
