§ Mr. Maclean[holding answer 13 May 1992]: Figures for United Kingdom production of these chemicals are supplied to the Government and the EC on a confidential basis. Consumption figures are collected for the European Community but are not broken down between member states. However, a 1990 study for the Department of Trade and Industry indicated that United Kingdom consumption fell by 50 per cent. between 1986 and 1989, a rate faster than that claimed by any other developed country.
