HL Deb 13 March 1992 vol 536 c83WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will publish the results of the annual census of religious registrations in prisons in England and Wales, taken in February 1992, and whether they will state what was the percentage of prisoners registered as belonging to the Church of England in each of the years from 1988 to 1992 inclusive.

Earl Ferrers

Returns of the 1992 census of religious registrations have still to be received from some prison establishments. As soon as the full results are available, they will be sent to the noble Lord and published in theOfficial Report. In each of the years 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991, the numbers of prisoners who asked to be registered as belonging to the Church of England, as a percentage of the total number (including those who asked to be registered as having no religion) were 55 per cent., 55 per cent., 54 per cent. and 53 per cent. respectively.
