§ Mr. AtkinsCopies of the findings from the surveys of primary schools and local education authorities in England have been placed in the Library. Over 95 per cent. of the primary schools and all the local education authorities consulted responded to the surveys. Of the schools responding, over 80 per cent. indicated that they already provide swimming as part of the physical education curriculum. Of those not providing swimming, only 28 schools (2.3 per cent. of the schools responding) said that they were more than five miles from the nearest swimming pool. The survey of local education authorities revealed that 2,385 primary schools (9–5 per cent.), 855 477W secondary schools (21.4 per cent.) and 11 tertiary colleges (11 per cent.) currently have a pool on site in working order.
