§ Mr. SackvilleA detailed examination of evidence relating to the possible effects of opencast mining upon the health of local residents was undertaken in 1988 and 1989 in connection with an application to establish a mine in south Wales. It concluded that there was insufficient evidence of harm arising from opencast mining operations to justify the refusal of the application. The findings were accepted by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales and further investigation was not considered necessary.
