HC Deb 24 June 1992 vol 210 cc227-8W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what training is given to NATO soldiers in optimum methods of peacekeeping.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

NATO has not so far been involved as a collective organisation in peacekeeping, although that may change in the future. The question of the requirement to train NATO soldiers in a peacekeeping role remains to be considered.

British forces have, of course, contributed to United Nations peacekeeping operations. For this latter role, the essential skills are those a soldier and unit are expected normally to achieve, supplemented as necessary by training related to the specific tasks which might be required by the particular UN operation.
