HL Deb 22 June 1992 vol 538 c21WA
Lord Molloy

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What threat to human rights in Kurdistan is posed by the build-up of Iraq forces in that area, and whether the work of the UN amongst the displaced Kurds is endangered thereby.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

Increased Iraqi military activity in northern Iraq, the continuing economic embargo and interference with United Nations relief operations are contrary to the terms of UN Security Council Resolution 688, which demands an end to the repression of the civilian population of Iraq. On 4th June the Government of France, the United States and the United Kingdom told the Iraqi government that they should cease such repressive actions.
