HC Deb 19 June 1992 vol 209 c700W
Mr. Ward

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will seek to amend the Wireless and Telegraphy Act 1949 to ensure that television sets can be used in prison cells without individual television licences being required.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The White Paper "Custody, Care and Justice, The Way Ahead for the Prison Service in England and Wales" announced that carefully monitored experiments would be held in a small number of prisons to help determine whether and under what conditions there might be opportunities for televisions in cells.

The television licensing requirements is one of the issues currently being considered.
