To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the average proportion of the 10 years prior to attaining state pension age spent in paid work by(a) and (b) women.

The 1991 labour force survey (GB) showed that 61.7 per cent. of men between the ages of 55 and 64, and 58.6 per cent. of women between the ages of 50 and 59, were in paid employment—paid employment is defined as a minimum of one hour per week.
