§ Mr. Charles WardleThe decision to deport Mr. Chahal was taken in August 1990 on the grounds that his deportation was conducive to the public good for reasons of national security and other reasons of a political nature, namely the international fight against terrorism. These grounds arise from Mr. Chahal's involvement in terrorism in this country and abroad. My right hon. and learned Friend recently reviewed the case and has confirmed that the deportation order should stand and that in view of the reasons for his deportation Mr. Chahal should continue to be detained pending the implementation of the order or his voluntary departure from the United Kingdom.
