Ms. Richardson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what information she has on the number of cases over the last five years of tampon-related toxic shock syndrome; and how many of these have resulted in death.

Statistics from the public health laboratory service indicate that in recent years cases of tampon-related toxic shock syndrome average around 15 per year with one or two deaths for the United Kingdom as a whole.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what percentage of national health service consultants in each specialty get distinction awards, A +, A, B and C; and of these what proportion do private practice.

Dr. Mawhinney

The distribution of distinction awards for England including special health authorities and Wales by specialty at 31 December 1991, the latest date for which information is available, is set out in the table.

Information is not held centrally on the number of award holders undertaking private practice.
