To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is his estimate of the level of subsidy provided per mile to(a) company car owners and (b) rail passengers for each year since 1979.

[holding answer 8 June 1992]: It is not possible to give an estimate of the subsidy per passenger mile to company car owners.

For rail passengers, the following is the information on subsidy per passenger mile requested:

1 in 1988 there were 28,000 male and 71,000 female claimants of income support in Wales. Separate figures for male and female partners are not available.
