§ Mr. AitkenMy Department is currently considering a proposal for a collaborative feasibility study with Italy to provide an affordable autonomous ship-borne weapon system for very short range air defence. This would provide protection against future anti-surface ship missiles and would enter service early in the next decade. Subject to satisfactory progress in negotiations, we hope to place a contract for the study early next year, following a competition.
