§ Mr. Ron DaviesTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he intends to take, during the United Kingdom presidency of the European Community, to ensure that the best possible safeguards for the welfare of animals kept in zoos are included in the EC proposal for a directive laying down the minimum standards for such animals.
§ Mr. MacleanThe Government will continue to play an active and constructive role in the negotiations on the draft Zoos Directive with the intention of maintaining the high standards of care and accommodation already being set by zoos in this country under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981, and encouraging similar standards throughout the Community.
