HL Deb 04 June 1992 vol 537 c71WA
Lord Cocks of Hartcliffe

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the duty paid by Gordon's Gin in the last full year for which figures are available.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Strathclyde)

I regret that the information requested is not available.

Lord Cocks of Hartcliffe

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What would the reduction on duty have been had Gordon's Gin reduced the alcohol content of their gin to 37.5 per cent.

Lord Strathclyde

The duty on spirits is charged per degree of alcohol and per litre. If the alcohol content of a drink is reduced from, say, 40 per cent. to 37.5 per cent., then the duty and consequential VAT will be 41 pence less per 70c1. bottle.
