HL Deb 03 June 1992 vol 537 c65WA
Lord Sefton of Garston

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When 2 Marsham Street was built, what is its market value and who were the architect and builder.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Strathclyde)

The offices at 2 Marsham Street were built in the 1960s and first occupied in 1971. The offices were designed by the Chief Architect of the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works (Eric Bedford) in conjunction with Robert Atkinson and Partners. The main building contractor was Bernard Sunley and Sons Ltd. The market value of the building is commercially sensitive and not for disclosure.

Lord Sefton of Garston

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are their reasons for demolishing 2 Marsham Street, and the expected cost of demolition.

Lord Strathclyde

The buildings at 2 Marsham Street are in need of major repair. The decision to demolish them was taken following a study by Arup Associates into a wide range of options for the necessary remedial works which concluded that neither repair nor refurbishment offered the best value for money when the overall costs of each option were compared. The likely cost of demolition is not yet known.
