HC Deb 02 June 1992 vol 208 cc446-7W
Mr. Gerrard

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what are the current indications of the number of schools facing shortages of funds due to the funding for teachers' salaries being calculated on an average rather than actual basis.

Mr. Forth

I have seen no evidence to suggest that many schools are facing shortage of funds as a result of the relative costs of their teachers. Local management of schools—LMS—means that schools that attract and retain pupils receive more money, and gives governing bodies the power to decide how best to spend that money for the benefit of pupils—including how many and which teachers to employ.
