HC Deb 02 June 1992 vol 208 c436W
Mr. John D. Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the trend of evidence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in livestock.

Mr. Hanley

The incidence of BSE in Northern Ireland is very low. Up to 21 May 1992 only 414 cases have been confirmed in a herd of 1.5 million cattle. The incidence of the disease is expected to increase for at least a further year when it is hoped that the ban on feeding ruminant-derived protein should begin to show visible results.
