Mr. John D. TaylorTo ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the trend of evidence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in livestock.
§ Mr. HanleyThe incidence of BSE in Northern Ireland is very low. Up to 21 May 1992 only 414 cases have been confirmed in a herd of 1.5 million cattle. The incidence of the disease is expected to increase for at least a further year when it is hoped that the ban on feeding ruminant-derived protein should begin to show visible results.
