HL Deb 16 July 1992 vol 539 c43WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, during the United Kingdom presi-dency of the Council of Ministers, they will seek to ensure that the interests of the poorest nations are taken into account in the GATT negotiations, or in the proposed multilateral trade organisation, and in particular to ensure that food producers in the third world are protected from low-price subsidised imports.

Baroness Denton of Wakefield

Her Majesty's Government will do their utmost during Britain's presidency of the Council of Ministers to bring the Uruguay Round of GATT negotiations to a successful conclusion. A successful Uruguay Round would increase world annual income by an estimated $ 195 billion, and developing countries would be major beneficiaries. An agreement will involve a commit-ment by the Community and other major agricultural producers substantially to reduce the level of subsidies on food exports.
