HL Deb 16 July 1992 vol 539 c53WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will urge the UN Security Council to restate its demand for the withdrawal of Indonesian armed forces from East Timor, so that a referendum on the political future of the territory can be held, in accordance with the Charter and with Article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We shall continue to offer our full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary General to promote a solution to the problem of East Timor. We shall continue also to play our part in the efforts of the European Community to the same end. We do not, however, believe that a new Security Council resolution would serve a useful purpose at present.
