HC Deb 16 July 1992 vol 211 cc1024-5W
Mr. Gallie

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he intends to increase the maximum penalty for causing death by dangerous driving or by careless driving while under the influence of drink and drugs.

Mr. Lang

The Government recognise understandable public concern about deaths caused by dangerous or careless driving. We propose to increase from five to 10 years the current maximum penalty for such offences at the earliest legislative opportunity. This will allow the courts to deal adequately with the worst offenders.
