HL Deb 16 July 1992 vol 539 c48WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What progress they are making in protecting the interests of Caribbean Communities dependent upon the export of bananas to the European Community, following the moves towards a single market in bananas.

The Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Earl Howe)

Formal Commission proposals are expected shortly for harmonised EC arrangements to complete the Single Market in bananas. The Government are determined to ensure that these new arrangements will fully meet our obligations to the Commonwealth Caribbean banana producers under the Lome Convention, while being compatible with a successful conclusion to the GATT Uruguay Round negotiations.
