HC Deb 15 July 1992 vol 211 cc846-7W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the amount of sulphur dioxide emissions monitored from power stations at(a) Ince in Cheshire and (b) Richborough in Kent in each year since 1988; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

The amount of sulphur dioxide in tonnes emitted from the power stations at Ince in Cheshire and Richborough in Kent for each year since 1988 was as follows:

Ince Richborough
1988 3,822 0
1989 3,954 485
1990 6,999 3,926
1991 8,207 15,186

Both stations have permission from Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution to burn limited amounts of orimulsion under legislation which preceded the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Future operations at these power stations will require authorisation from HMIP under the 1990 Act. PowerGen applied for authorisation in April 1991. The applications are the subject of an appeal to my right hon. and learned Friend about commercial confidentiality. They cannot be determined until after the appeal decision, which will be made as soon as possible.
