To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of staff in post in central Government Departments at 1 April.

On 1 April 1992 there were 565,319 staff in post in central Government. Of those, 504,237 were non-industrial staff and 61,082 were classified as being in industrial work. A summary showing staff in post by Department has been placed in the Library.
